Coco Loco Costa Rica is located on Playa Flamingo, one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. If you ever wanted to sit in the sand, enjoy delicious food and drinks, take in stunning sunsets just feet from the Pacific, then Coco Loco is for you.
Beach front dining is literally just feet from the water, especially at high tide. The sunset views are amazing and the food even better.
In addition to the dozen or so outside tables on the beach, there is also a small indoor seating area located on the other side of the access road.
Coco Loco specializes is fresh, locally caught seafood that is moderately priced and won't break the bank.
I had the Corvina Flamingo, or sea bass, as they call it in Costa Rica. Corvina is a mild, white, flaky, delicate and tender fish that is one of my favorites. The fish was not grilled but instead flash broiled under high heat leaving a nice crust on the outside and was very moist on the inside. It was topped with a nice avocado, mango and tomato salsa and was surrounded by a tasty beurre blanc sauce and rice.
We also had the fresh Mahi Mahi (Dorado) sandwich. It consisted of a large tender and sweet fish filet on a homemade bun garnished with locally grown lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and onion. Included was some rice and a wonderful citrus garlic aioli sauce.
Our final entree was the Blackened Swordfish Caesar Wrap which consist of tender and sweet Swordfish combined with a Caesar salad wrapped in a flour tortilla. It was paired with some of the best, crispy potato wedges that I have ever tasted.
Coco Loco is located near the southern end of Playa Flamingo and accessible via the dirt road that runs along the edge of the beach. Parking is alongside the road and there is usually a parking attendant that charges a few thousand colones to watch over your car.
The best way to reach the access road is from the center of Playa Flamingo located just north of the beach. The road turns from pavement to dirt near the Margaritaville Resort. Continue down the road and park before you get to Coco Loco. If you drive all the way to Coco Loco, the road becomes very narrow with no parking. There is also a less popular all dirt road that connects to the access road from the south.
As with any restaurant that sits on the sand or near the beach in Costa Rica, make sure that you bring suntan lotion because as the sun gets low, the umbrellas do little to protect you. The sun in Costa Rica can be very intense. If you are dining near sunset, also bring bug spray. While there may or may not be mosquitos, there will always be no-see-ums, a tiny little sand flea that will make your life miserable the following day if you don't take some type of precaution. This is especially important at Coco Loco Costa Rica because so many of the tables sit directly in the sand.
In summary, Coco Loco Costa Rica is one of the best restaurants in Central America. If you are near the Guanacaste towns of Coco, Liberia or Tamarindo, this is definitely a must visit restaurant.
